Extreme Cold Weather Tactical Operations

About the Course
Extreme Cold Weather Tactical Operations Training:
This training provides comprehensive instruction in small unit operations conducted in extreme environments. Participants will learn how to conduct tactical movements both on foot with skis and using snowmobiles, ensuring optimal efficiency, safety, and mission success. The course covers equipment management, operational planning, and cold-weather-specific tactics and techniques. Special focus is given to survival in sub-zero environments, patrolling in mountainous and forested terrain, backcountry skiing, ambushes, raids, reconnaissance missions, and patrol base establishment. This training emphasizes practical skills with hands-on exercises to build competence in operating as part of a small tactical unit in remote, harsh conditions.
Training Objectives and Key Points:
I. Backcountry Skiing and Movement Techniques
Mastering cross-country skiing and ski techniques for efficient tactical movement
Ascending and descending slopes safely with weapons and equipment
Managing fatigue and conserving energy during long movements
Transitioning from skis to snowshoes or foot travel when necessary
II. Proper Equipment for Extreme Cold Weather
Clothing layering systems for moisture management and insulation
Selecting appropriate cold-weather gear, including sleeping systems and shelters
Use of snowshoes, skis, and ski poles in different terrain and snow conditions
Maintenance and emergency repair of cold-weather gear in the field
III. Personal and Crew Sled Packing for Tactical Operations
Efficiently packing personal sleds (pulks) for patrols and extended operations
Packing snowmobile sleds for mobility with quick access to mission-critical gear
Securely transporting crew-served weapons (e.g., machine guns, mortars, anti-armor weapons)
Balancing weight distribution for mobility, speed, and access
IV. Small Unit Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (TTPs)
Tactical patrolling procedures for dismounted and snowmobile operations
Conducting ambushes, raids, and reconnaissance missions in snow-covered terrain
Use of concealment, noise discipline, and camouflage in snowy environments
Route planning and terrain navigation under low-visibility conditions
V. Movement with Snowmobiles in Tactical Operations
Operating snowmobiles tactically, including movement techniques and formations
Silent movement techniques and using snowmobiles for rapid infiltration/exfiltration
Procedures for snowmobile patrol halts, quick dismounts, and ambush preparation
Coordination between ski elements and snowmobile teams
VI. Establishing and Operating Patrol Bases in Extreme Cold Weather
Site selection for patrol bases, considering concealment and environmental factors
Snow shelter construction and use of pre-existing shelters for warmth and protection
Managing cold injuries and maintaining unit health during extended operations
Implementing security, rotation plans, and watch schedules for patrol bases
Establishing communication procedures based on terrain and enemy situation
VII. Cold Weather Ambush, Raid, and Recon Operations
Planning and executing ambushes and raids in deep snow and extreme temperatures
Surveillance and reconnaissance operations with minimal environmental impact
Synchronizing movement of ski and snowmobile teams for complex missions
Use of flares, thermal equipment, and cold-weather communications gear
VIII. Emergency Procedures and Risk Mitigation
Identifying and mitigating risks of cold-related injuries (frostbite, hypothermia)
Emergency evacuation procedures with snowmobiles and sleds
Field maintenance of weapons and equipment in extreme conditions
Conducting casualty evacuation in snow-covered terrain
IX. Establishing Resupply and Logistics Support
Planning logistical support prior to infiltration based on support assets available
Creating the resupply mechanisms with the higher headquarters
Identifying and requesting enablers for mission support
Planning resource requirements based on terrain, weather and enemy situation.
Course Duration and Equipment Requirements:
Varies depending on individuals participating. Each course can be customized to meet the requirements of the participants. Please contact us for a quote.
This course blends classroom instruction with practical, field-based exercises, culminating in a multi-day field training exercise (FTX) to apply learned skills in realistic scenarios. Participants will engage in small-unit patrolling, execute tactical missions, and practice setting up patrol bases, all while managing real-world cold-weather challenges.
This training builds physical endurance, fosters teamwork, and develops the tactical skills necessary to operate effectively in the most demanding environments.
