About the Course
DOWNHILL & BACKCOUNTRY SKIING
This comprehensive training program is designed to provide participants with essential skills and knowledge for downhill and backcountry skiing. With a focus on safety, technical expertise, and terrain navigation, this course covers everything from setting up equipment to executing parallel turns in varied conditions. Taught by certified instructors (AIARE Pro Level 1 and PSIA Level 1), participants will gain the confidence to enjoy both groomed slopes and challenging backcountry environments while prioritizing safety.
Courses are hosted at Vail Resort in Colorado
Upon request courses may be held at any available U.S. ski area (pending instructor approval).
The standard courses are:
One Day Skiing: For Moderate to Advanced Skiers; Focuses on improving an individual’s downhill inbound skiing ability with an endstate of skiing moguls by the end of the day and possibly trees; Includes instruction on how to set DIN settings on bindings.
Three Day Tour: For Moderate to Advanced skiers; Two days of inbound resort skiing followed by one day of a ski tour. Teaching points during downhill will focus on skiing moguls and trees with an endstate of skiing double black diamond ski runs. The backcountry tour will focus on movement techniques, route selection, avalanche awareness, introduction to beacon searches; finished with a ski run down to the start point.
Five Day Course: For skiers looking to improve skiing ability and knowledge of backcountry ski techniques. Training includes two days of inbound ski training with an endstate of skiing double black diamond ski runs. The following three days will all be backcountry skiing movements. Backcountry ski training will include boot and ski setup with information on DIN settings; proper equipment for backcountry movements, avalanche AIRE Level 1 training (not certification); avalanche and weather awareness; avalanche response and beacon searches; route selection; each day will include at least one downhill ski run back to the start point, more runs as time and light permits.
Training Objectives:
By the end of this course, participants will:
Set appropriate DIN (release value) settings for bindings based on personal weight, height, skill, and boot size.
Learn to tune and wax skis for optimal performance in varying snow conditions
Use and maintain ski skins for efficient uphill travel.
Develop routes for safe uphill and downhill skiing in backcountry terrain.
Assess avalanche risks through observation and decision-making techniques.
Master parallel turns to ski efficiently in both groomed and off-piste terrain.
